About 100 of the college leaders “are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18” (Ventura County Star). They think that when it is illegal, college students drink more dangerously. There are many dissenting opinions. More than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependence, now. Mothers Against Drunk Driving said lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes, and current laws will not be enforced at those campuses.
This is a worthless argument. It is shocking that people of such high social standing are seeking a debate on lowering the drinking age. It is understandable that some students think that it is the same maturity between 21 and 18. In addition, college students will drink whether it is illegal or not.
However, we already have a law that prohibits drinking alcoholic beverages for those under 21. There is no reason to change the law, because it is very clear that drinking alcohol since one’s youth will have harmful effects on health. Younger people have less responsibility and tend to abuse alcohol. Therefore, college students should avoid alcohol as much as they can and concentrate on their studies. Moreover, we, adults should spend our time discussing young people’s future, such as their education or health; rather than putting them in a more dangerous environment.
